Demons
Friday, June 5, 2009
Most people (especially in the modern world) don't want to address the topic of evil spirits, ie. fallen angels, demons, ancestral spirits, satan. This last weekend, I had a handful.
It seems that in the rural areas of Africa, evil spirits reveal their presence openly and boastfully. During the weekend outreach of ABIDE, we encountered one girl possessed by something and a boy disturbed by . Most of the connection to the spiritual realm is through family witchcraft. Is it all primitive folklore and scientific ignorance? Or is it a reality of the spiritual world that the west would rather blissfully ignore? While many may agree with the first option, my real life experience supports the latter.

Today is one of those days where you were very busy, but didn't do anything. And now I just feel like it would have been better to stay home in bed all day. Too bad that is impossible!
Communitas
My sister Beth lives in New Orleans with a community of believers that live intentionally with their neighbors and friends to share the love and salvation of Jesus Christ. It is all about accepting people into their community and then sharing the joys and sorrows of life together.
Crystal and I have been deeply craving that type of community in Uganda. It is a huge hole in our lives that we long to fill. But there seems to be no place for it here. The church is an organization rather than a family. Even the last Sunday Service I attended, before the preacher shared, a man from the head church shared how everyone must become a member of the club, pay membership fees and follow the rules to serve the church (institution). It made me sick... so I walked out! I want the body of Christ to be what it is intended... a community of believers in love with Christ and one another, sacrificing their lives for His purpose and His people. May that Kingdom Come in Mbarara, Uganda. | |
